Daniel Puente Encina, the Barcelona-based Chilean singer-songwriter/guitarist, presents his stunning new animated video Freire, created by talented illustrator Cristián Montes Lynch and his team. This deep, thoughtful song tells the tale of a worker at one of the numerous mines dotted throughout the Andes, who is forced to cycle hours and hours to and from his job. On his way, he has to pass a treacherous curve that has claimed the lives of countless travellers. Our (anti)hero has nothing, nothing except the hope of reaching his village, celebrating the fact he is still alive and asking his girlfriend for a dance. The video’s tale reflects the wretched existence of workers in an industry that creates untold wealth, told in the style of the graphic design of the Chile of the 60s and 70s, the time of Allende’s Unidad Popular, and when social movements reached their peak before being savagely repressed throughout Latin America. GENRE: Afro-Peruvian Folk
